| I want to install RH linux 9.0 and windows XP SP1 on a computer with two hard disks. The primary disk is 160GB and the secondary disk is 80GB. Previously with only one disk, I install linux and windows XP on the same disk with dual boot capability so that during bootup I select either linux and windows XP. With two disks, I wonder if I install windows XP on disk 1 and linux on disk 2, and change the boot disk sequence (order) in the BIOS to select either disk 1 or disk 2 to boot first, will this scheme work? i.e. "disk 1 first" will boot windows XP and "disk 2 first" will boot linux. What is the advantage and disadvantage of this scheme? |

Just like you boot today execpt it will pick second drive. You do know that you can set which default OS to boot if you like. |

| Should I use the scheme "install windows XP on disk 1 and linux on disk 2" instead of "install both windows XP and linux on disk 1"? It is up to you. Only you can decide what is the best usage of the disks. You need about ~4gig for a linux install. With linux's boot loader you can boot several different linuxs on different disks and still boot XP. You can even have XP as the default OS to boot. You can install the linux boot loader on the mbr of disk 1 and install on disk 2 and the rom still boots from disk 1. If you plan on writting files from linux to XP create a fat32 logical disk so linux can write to it. Mandrake linux can read NTFS out of the box. Before the linux install, use the micro$oft tools to create the free/unformated/unknown partition where you plan to install linux. http://doc.mandrakelinux.com/Mandrak.../Starter.html/ Other people's Free advice: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html and a very large Frequently Asked Questions (faq) search engine http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search key words(s) in the first box *linux* in the Newsgroup box, pick english |
