| Hi folks, Is there something special I need to do to install linux to a sata drive? The machine I'm trying to install to currently only has a single sata 120GiB HDD. Three different distros have all failed to recognose the presence of the HDD. Interestingly knoppix boots happily and sees the drive and the W2000 install that the system builder left on as a test. It's an MSI motherboard and a sepron3100 processor with 256GB ram, but beyond that I'm not sure what else you would need to know. The fact that knoppix works indicates that the SATA chipset is supported, but maybe not be included by default on the installer on the distro's you are trying. There may be a command line option you can enter at boot for setup which will indicate to use a special initrd or kernel. Check the README for each distro. -- Douglas Mayne |

(If I am reading the box specs correctly.) I did nothing beyond what the installation disk asked for. I don't know from MBs and chipsets. It did install as a logical volume rather than hda if that matters. But I have another question, if it installed how could it not recognize the HD? I've tried googleing, tried the MSI website, linuxanswers.org and even the centos and red hat sites, but so far found nothing. I'll keep looking, but half the problem is that I'm not really certain what to look for. Searching on K8NGM-V & linux does find stuff, but nothing to do with installing to a sata drive. Looking for more generic install linux onto sata gave me (amongst others) links to kernaltrap.org[1] and linuxmafia.com[2], both of which suggested that FC4 and CENTOS4.2 should work 'out of the box'. There was one page I found that suggested that I pretend that the sata drive is scsi - but how do I do that?
