Default Installing suitable linux distro on Dell Inspiron 5100!

Hello there!

Long time no see. Well, I resized my ntfs partition with ntfsresize
(mlf.linux.rulez.org/mlf/ezaz/ntfsresize.html) and wanted to install a
suitable linux distro to be used for c/c++ programming environment
mostly. I don't need X-window right now but the internal Broadcom
10/100 ethernet, sound card and some kind of battery monitor with ACPI
should work initially. I know redhat 9 or mandrake 9.2 should work
fine but, I can't download 3 iso image CD's right now. So, I need a
latest distro which would be not more than 650 MB, which I can
download with my dial-up access. After googling for several hours, I
found fedora/redhat to be better option, but it comes with 3/4 iso
images. Can I download only the required modules from fedora/redhat
and burn in on cd?

or

Can you please locate a suitable distro for me? Gentoo? or Knoppix hd
install?

The generic config of Inspiron 5100 is appended below:

Network: built-in BroadComm ethernet/modem
Video: ATI Radeon M6 7500 AGP
Sound: builtin Intel AC97 audio

Thanks in advance.

Ok, Knoppix is suitable since it contains a c compiler and linked libs:-)
But it has not much source packages and and developing tools
may also be missing. It's a out-of-the-box productive system
with e.g. OpenOffice or Mozilla, which you won't need for developement.

I think Debian distro offers the feature just to download a bootable CD
and install the rest right from the net.
It surely provides all packages you would need (full distro size
is 7 CDs w/out src packages) but you download only the ones you really install.

Check it out at www.debian.org

Well another point to start searching might be:

www.linuxiso.org

It's a collection of DL-links for a variety of distros.

I forgot to mention, that Knoppix is based on a Debian system.
I've never tried it, but if you have a Knoppix-CD already,
you could try to hd-install it and then complete installation
of dev-tools/packages via internet.

On the std.-Knoppix Desktop with K there is some menu entry
for getting add. software.
Might be the starting point for net install.

Have a nice day

Did you check out http://www.linux-laptop.net ?

I have a Dell Latitude C640. I run slackware, http://www.slackware.org,
my favorite distro because it's stripped down compared to many others.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Now, I found "Network install" from a minimal CD
on debian.org. Hopefully the ppp connection stays up!
