| Hi, I am running Fedora Core 2, kernel 2.6.5. I am trying to upgrade to kernel 2.6.12. Is there anything wrong in downloading and building the kernel in user home directories? I doing this as root, though. My doubt is about whether the kernel compilation process assumes that kernel source is located in /usr/src. I tried googling the net and the usenet groups but could not find anything that directly answers this question. Cordially Vineet |

Doesn't matter, however with kernel 2.6 on a rpm based distro you really want to type 'make rpm' after you setup things (menuconfig) to your needs, a good starting point is the distro provided config, found in /boot or /proc/config.gz. You need write permission in the default config below /usr/src/redhat, to use make rpm. Always include adequate context. I'd urge you to grab a Core 4 update FTP site and install the RPM or build from the SRPM. It will also iinform you of dependencies on glibc, modutils, and other packages that you may encounter. Why not simply upgrade to FC4 and then do the updates? FC2 is now deprectated. |

The purpose of this exercise is to teach me about linux kernel. I am learning how to build the kernel from the sources and to write my own modules & drivers. So installing the newer kernel using rpm will not server my purpose, though will take care of all the headache. Okay, I have more questions. I am going to post them in a seperate thread. The procedure for building a kernel is as follows, make gconfig (This brings up a configuration GUI, you select the options that you want and then save them in the .config file) make all (make everything, you can do this as a user or as root) make modules_install (installs the modules, you need to be root to do this) make install (install the kernel, also updates /etc/grub.conf or /etc/lilo.conf) |

Redhat typically puts a bunch of patches into the kernel to make it behave like a "Redhat" kernel ( and correct some bugs and to add features that Linux does not do-- eg from the AC version). This means that your kernel will not have those. >> >> My doubt is about whether the kernel compilation process assumes that >> kernel source is located in /usr/src. Cool. Be aware that FC2 hs a "kernel-source" package with the kernel source in it, but FC4 has it buried in the SRPM compilation options and doesn't normally publish it directly anymore. |
