| I've just downloaded and burned the new Knoppix live eval cd. Below is the limited directions on how to "install" to a harddrive. A: In principal, yes (after all, the "master" system also runs on a hard drive before it is burned to CD). However there is currently no installation GUI for this, so installation to a hard drive should probably only be attempted by more knowledgeable Linux users. Assuming the KNOPPIX system has already booted, installation approximately follows this procedure: 1.) initialize a free partition with the ext2 file system and mount it on /mnt/knoppix, for example. 2.) cp -a /KNOPPIX/* /mnt/knoppix/ 3.) set up /mnt/knoppix/etc/fstab and /mnt/knoppix/etc/lilo.conf for the new system (Caution: symlinks in /boot initially point to the Ram disk!), run lilo. 4.) mkdir /mnt/knoppix/home/knoppix && \ chown knoppix.knoppix /mnt/knoppix/home/knoppix 5.) Reboot, try the system out, fix any broken settings. (No guarantees.) Now I do have a harddrive set up as follows: hdc1 ext2 space available 500 megs hdc2 swap space available 500 megs hdc3 ext3 space available 17 gigs What do I need to look out for when setting this up? Should the drive be reset with a 1 gig boot (hdc1) and set the /mnt/knoppix mount point there? Or can I just fdisk the drive to two partitions. The primary/root partition 17 gigs ext2 file system, and a 1 gig swap partition. The pc where this will be running is a Dell p3 933 mz sis 6326 video card 265 megs ram, 3com nic, and built on board sound. All systems are detedted and run when the Knopix cd is on the drive. I'd just like to run it from the hd instead of the cd. Thanks in advance. |
