| Can someone recommend a linux distro for an AMD k6-2 500, 256M RAM, 32MB TNT2, Soundblaster, and 10Gb HD. Im looking for a Distro that can setup without needing to hack at the configuration for a week to get it going. Anything that would allow to do the usual array of browsing, watching videos, listening ot music, burning discs, skype and yahoo chat etc. standard home user stuff. Ive had no success getting debian installed on this machine, can never get the installer to go right for some reason. Tried knoppix, didnt like the interface, wouldn't install right either. Any ideas would be appreciated. Provided they dont cost money |

That is a very old model of computer and very few of the distros with GUI's will work properly or at all with that slow chip. -- Iraq Body Count: http://icasualties.org/oif/ 15 yr old Ava Lowery Reflects on the Iraq War: http://www.peacetakescourage.com/whatwillyoudo.html |

I ran it on everything from a 486 with 4MB RAM to AMD64 with 1 GB RAM at one time or another - single and multiboot. It is stable and scales well for older machines. Version 10.2 and version 11.0 is "imminent" You may also wish to try slackware derivatives such as Vector Linux http://vectorlinux.com/ I am trying VL 5.1 on Compaq Evo N400c (PIII) laptop to see how it works as a "desktop" OS, ie hardware detection. Most peoples' gripe with Slack is that is doesn't hold your hand with an install GUI and skips setting up USB ports and PCMCIA (PCCARD) slots (it loads the drivers, you just have to configure fstab for example) so you get up and running quickly. If you try slack, go with XFCE or another streamlined wm, since KDE can be a bit of a hog on you system. |

Provided they dont cost money I was using an AMD k6-2 box until recently, and would recommend (based on personal use) Puppy Linux. It's a fast, compact distro on that hardware, and also ideal if you are on dial-up. http://www.puppyos.com/ |

Thank you. Indeed! I'd strongly recommend Debian on the OP's aged system, it should fly even with KDE on it. Presuming a working Internet connection, Debian GNU/Linux can be installed through the Internet with just 1-3 floppy images: http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst -- Michael Heiming (X-PGP-Sig > GPG-Key ID: EDD27B94) mail: echo zvpunry@urvzvat.qr | perl -pe 'y/a-z/n-za-m/' #bofh excuse 15: temporary routing anomaly |

I certainly don't want to rain on any volunteers' parade, and salute the Fedora Legacy people even attempting that quite daunting task, but consensus seems to be that they have not been able to do an adequate job, and the resulting systems still have serious security problems. (You may want to read the archives of Linux Weekly News on that topic.) I would certainly hasten to point RH9 diehards to Fedora Legacy, otherwise. As it is, I cannot in good conscience, and attempt to send them to CentOS, instead. -- Cheers, Founding member of the Hyphenation Society, a grassroots-based, Rick Moen not-for-profit, locally-owned-and-operated, cooperatively-managed, rick@linuxmafia.com modern-American-English-usage-improvement association. |
