Fedora Legacy is certainly a good idea for people who can't
upgrade running systems for whatever reason in a timely fashion.

However, the OP is asking about a *FRESH* installation, it is
beyond me why people recommend some EOL distro? Though it might
well be, they are using doze and have never ever heard about
patches?

And for those who do not know, Fedora Legacy support for RH9,
FC1 & 2 is soon going to end. Please see http://www.fedoralegacy.org/
for the news.

....and I've yet to encounter a binary distro that gets you up and running
faster than Slackware.
