I am looking for an iso of a minimal linux distro for a 386:

with 8mb ram, 430 mb hd, pentium 75mhz currently has windoz3.1/dos.

You may want to try TINY Linux (http://tiny.seul.org/), or if that
doesn't work you can go to Linux Online (http://www.linux.org/dist/) and
look for minimalist distros and pick one that works for you.

If you are talking about a LiveCD you can find some in the Knoppix
home site, all variants from the Knoppix distribution. Also there is
a Gnome LiveCD lite I think.

If you are talking about a distribution to install, Debian would be
the more obvious advice, but someone told in some newsgroup that the
installer needed 16Mb to run, so he said the best solution would be
a Slackware.

Thanks everyone for the input so far. My solution will be to get some more
ram out of another non-functioning box.

I am now running into another problem. There seems to be no way in the bios
to tell this box to boot from CD. It does have DOS installed and working,
but I am not a dos person by any means. How can I make it fire up the iso
image on the cd? I can see it is there, just can't figure out how to make
it execute? I tried looking for an updated bios, but no luck so far on that.
Hopefully someone out there knows the dos command to ececute that image...

Thanks again. It's a fun experiment to see if I can get this old dinosauer
doing something worthwhile rather than ending up in a landfill.

You could *maybe* run DamnsmallLinux on a 386 with 16 megs of RAM.
www.damnsmalllinux.org DSL will certainly run on a P75.

What do you want to do with this computer?
With such old hardware you can probably run iptables on 2 nics.
If it is only for home usage you can probably also put a dns caching server

This is an experiment, really.

What I am wanting to do with it first is to secure it as best I can, then I
am going to try to break into it, then resecure it. I just found a free 3
gig drive, so some more possabilites come up. Once I have it locked up
tight, I'm going to see what else I can get away with using it for.

If it can't boot from cd, you need something that can boot from a floppy.
You might try BasicLinux:
