| Hi guys, Finally, after so many failed attempts (gave up in past)I managed to install Ubuntu 5.10 on my Inspiron 6000 (dula boot w/ winxp pro). Wanna know the following: 1. What kind of program should I install so that I don't miss windows? 2. Any upgrade that you guys recommend? 3. Any third party software which would be really good? Or anyother setting suggestion which would be good for a novice linux user migrating from winxp..... Thanx in advance, bye. |

Will you feel sorely let down if Linux does not do... advanced image processing? look at the gimp web browsing? Try FireFox. word processing? Try openoffice.org. etc. What would you miss? > 2. Any upgrade that you guys recommend? I run a program every night that automatically downloads and updates any released update to any of software packages I have installed. However, I am not sure that program works with Ubuntu. My program is called "yum". Does Ubuntu have "apt-get" (or something similar)? Perhaps it can do it, or perhaps yum can handle that style of packages. > 3. Any third party software which would be really good? The Gimp is really good for its purpose. Hello everybody, what is the first thing that comes to *your* mind? > Or anyother setting suggestion which would be good for a novice linux > user migrating from winxp..... In principle, most ditributors try to guess exactly what their users want, and include that in the distribution. I have seen that Ubuntu has climbed fast on the popularity scale, so I guess they must have been good at doing just that. But if you have any special needs or tastes that not everybody shares you could tell about it, and see what we come up with. Hello guys, what do you use Linux for? Where do you download music? Especially, legal sources? Cool sources? Do you play interactive games? Watch videos? Programming? Earning a damned living? -Enrique |

Only if you install a fully equipped one. The version included with SuSE, for example, is deliberately crippled to avoid the use of libdvdcss or MPEG formats. Fortunately, the ones you cn download from the packman.de websites are compiled for SuSE and include a list of the things they can't publish there (such as the DVD decryption libraries) and direct hints on what they're called and thus, how to get them. |
