Dan Since you want to pay, that pretty well limits you to Xandros . . . or Mandrake . . . or Linspire . . . or Suse . . . or . . . I haven't used an "if" or an "and" or a "but" yet. How'm I doin' so far?-) As you just want to try it, I suggest a live CD like Knoppix, which you can run off the CD. -- Everyone, please stop using "whilst." |

Who should I shop? Dan That's an impossible question to answer. There are loads of general, mainstream Linux distros, most of them available for free download. They all have essentially the same software for email and www. Being more specific here gets you better answers. Asking this question will just get you a list of the distros we use. For example, I use Debian but recommend Mandrake to newbies and have version 10 as an option with Debian on this dual-boot system. Look here for descriptions of a large number of distros: http://www.distrowatch.com -- Andy. |

Who should I shop? Dan Please clarify. Are you looking for a brand new system that comes with Linux pre-installed? If so, try Walmart for starters. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =----- |

Years ago I did some programing in Cobal, C, Assembly, and Basic. How about Forth? Anybody still using that? There are several on the WWW who offer systems. I thought a recommendation in order. Dan |

There's C, assembly, BASIC, fortran and forth on almost every linux distro (to name but a few), I dunno about cobol though. So it looks like some people still dabble in forth (otherwise, the forth compiler wouldn't still be updated) |

I will shop for a computer with Debian installed. So far I've seen no computer firms recommended. Dan |

As Wesley said, you could try Wal-Mart. Or you could google "linux pre-installed" and come up with this, among many others. http://www.linux.org/docs/beginner/preinstalled.html Maybe someone here will be able to comment on whatever you find. Good hunting. -- Everyone, please stop using "whilst." |
