| Hi friends, I ran into this problem installing Linux on my computer. I don't know what it is, or why it is occuring so I am turning to people here to help me out, if possible. I was trying to install Fedora Core 5 from a set of 5 CDs. When I booted my computer from the first CD, the screen that appeared was the one that allows you to see the installation instructions: F1 for main, F2 for Options, ... F4 for Kernel, F5 for rescue, etc. and where you just have to press Enter to start the installation in Graphical mode (or type 'linux text' to install in text mode). I pressed Enter and this is what happened: Loading vmlinuz .................................................. ........... Loading initrd.img .................................................. ........ .................................................. ..................................... Then a series of messages appeared on the screen that I was unable to read and when the terminal paused, this is what appeared: ide: failed opcode was: unknown hdc: dma_intr: status = 0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error} hdc: dma_intr: error = 0x84 (DriveStatusError BadCRC} ide: failed opcode was: unknown hdc: dma_intr: status = 0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error} hdc: dma_intr: error = 0x84 (DriveStatusError BadCRC} ide: failed opcode was: unknown hdc: dma_intr: status = 0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error} hdc: dma_intr: error = 0x84 (DriveStatusError BadCRC} ide: failed opcode was: unknown BUG: spinlock recursion on CPU#0, swapper/0 (Not tainted) lock: c0350fa0, .magic:dead4ead, .owner:swapper/0, .owner_cpu: 0 [<c01c3b06>] _raw_spin_lock+0x33/0xdd [<c02d666c>] _spin_lock_irqsave+0x9/0xd [<c0226694>] _atiixp_ide_dma_host_off+0x1b/0x7c [<c023ad89>] __ide_dma_off_quietly+0x1c/0x26 [<c02355db>] _check_dma_crc+0x19/0xa8 [<c0235842>] do_reset1+0xca/0x1a7 [<c023413c>] __ide_error+0x1a1/0x1b4 [<c0236768>] ide_dump_opcode+0x8a/0x8e [<c02341a6>] ide_error+0x57/0x6b [<c023afee>] ide_dma_intr+0x0/0x8f [<c0234d9c>] ide_intr+0x131/0x18c [<c01376a2>] handle_IRQ_event+0x23/0x4c [<c0137745>] __do_IRQ+0x7a/0xcd [<c0105552>] do_IRQ+0x5c/0x77 ======================= [<c0103b4a>] common_interrupt+0x1a/0x20 [<c0101e6e>] mwait_idle+0x1a/0x30 [<c0101e3f>] cpu_idle+0x38/0x4d [<c0393664>] start_kernel+0x24a/0x24b If anyone knows what these messages signify, please tell me. Is it possible to view the messages are printed to the terminal before the terminal pauses? If you would like to know the hardware profile of my computer, I will be happy to provide it. I have tried installing using the 'noprobe' option, but that too leads to the above set of errors. Thanks, Tarun |

If you have burned your own set of discs, then you should verify they have been written correctly. Also, some CDROM drives seem to have more trouble than others. -- Douglas Mayne |

| Is there any fix for a cdrom that boots the first install disk fine untill it needs to mount, then fails? This document covers the setup options thoroughly: http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/fedora...l-methods.html There could be other issues with the CDROM, too. I have seen this error crop up on CDROM drives which normally work fine, but have trouble with some versions of the 2.6.x Linux kernel. I would only advise you to verify your media are known good, because that is the most likely problem. Next, if you have a known good spare CDROM drive, install it temporarily. Sorry, I am not more help. The RH/FC specifics are fading fast from my memory. -- Douglas Mayne |

| Hi Douglas, I realised where I was going wrong. I have three hard disks on my computer and I was trying to install LInux on one of them with all three connected (one as Primary Master, the second as Primary Slave and the third as Secondary Master; the CDRW connects as the Secondary Slave). I disconnected the other two hard disks from my computer, made the hard disk that i wanted to install Fedora on as the Primary Master and, Hey Presto, it works. So, for some reason, the installation drive (CDRW) was not able to identify which IDE drive to install Linux on. Or am I still going wrong? Tarun |
