I would like to try GNU/Linux, but I need some information on how to
setup my system. I have 2 H/D the master is a duel boot 40gb with
windows 2000 pro and Windows XP home and my slave is a 30gb which I
use for just downloading to but I can use the master for that, so what
I would like to know is it ok to put GNU/Linux on to the slave, if so
how do I boot to the slave drive. Is there any docs on the internet
tell you how to do this..

Yes, there are hundreds, possibly thousands of documents detailing this.

You probably don't need them. Tell the installer to install to
/dev/hdb, install Grub or Lilo to the MBR of /dev/hda. If you see a box
for lba, make sure it is checked.

Yes it is. During the installation just pick the right disk and
it will be ok.
Read the documentation related to the installation of your
distribution.
