| As you cannot seem to get out of this then it would not be possible to do what is suggested. However while it is listing the blank page you should be able to press ctrl alt F2 ( or F3 or F4 probably ) This will give you a login screen. Login as root, ie at the login: promt type root and press enter key when asked for root's passwrd enter it. then type the following vi /etc/inittab pressing enter will then display a file using the cursor keys scroll down until you find the line which looks like id:5:initdefault: above this line will be a list which shows what the possible values can be. You need to change the 5 so the system starts up in consloe mode ( A bit like the old DOS prompt ) When you start linux the next time it will come up in this mode. You will then be able to sort something out. To edit the value move the cursor so it is flashing on the 5 Press the insert key twice and on the bottom line of the screen you will see REPLACE which means that whatever you type will overwrite what is there so press whatever key gives the full multi user mode then press the escape key then type :wq and press enter . now reboot. Sorry I can't help any more than this as I have never used Debian so perhaps some Debian user can tell you how to go from there. By the way the advice to use Mandrake is good except that version 10 is still only a beta release so go for Mandrake 9.2 best wishes, norman |
