It would have really helped if you gave us this info in your OP.

This shouldn't happen, perhaps you triggered some bug, make sure
you are running all available updates including the kernel for
whatever version of RH you are running.

Does the system recover from the slowdown without hard reboot? Is
there anything in /var/log/* giving some clue about what happened?
