| I am looking for a linux distribution that doesn't assume too much for me in the way of how things are set up. I have used RedHat for years, and have recently tried Mandrake. First of all I like Gnome and version 2.2 because I want to develop for Gnome. The thing I like about Mandrake is that you can customize the menu. There are other things that are harder to customize with Mandrake however. Does anyone know of a distro that is easily customizable for a programmer, but is still moderately easy to install? Thanks for your opinions in advance. Jeremy Whiting |

Well, keeping in mind that this question has 6,400,000 answers.-) You could look at Libranet. It's based on Debian, with updated kernel and software. Has a configuration tool called Adminmenu that even has a kernel section. Many DEs to choose from. I use Libranet - not connected otherwise. > Thanks for your opinions in advance. > > Jeremy Whiting Happy hunting. jim |

I've got a Web page with my opinions on several distributions: http://www.rodsbooks.com/distribs/ Of course, distribution preference is quite personal. One of the two points you mention specifically (easy customizability of the menu) is one that I look at in a very different way, since I don't use GNOME. (In fact, I detest Mandrake's handling of menu updates, since I've always maintained my IceWM menu manually, and Mandrake keeps overwriting my menu.) -- Rod Smith, rodsmith@rodsbooks.com http://www.rodsbooks.com Author of books on Linux, FreeBSD, and networking |
