Default Reinstalling Windows XP forced LILO removal...how do I get it back?

Hi,

I am very new to linux, having been using MS windows for years and
years. Anyway, I started looking into linux recently, so I got Mandriva
Linux (10.1) and installed it. It all went very nicely, I manage to get
LILO to install so that I could choose between XP and Linux, all very
happily (on teh same hard drive).

But for some unrelated reason I needed to re-install windows XP
recently. I did this and lo and behold its written back its MBR and
thus LILI is gone and so i can't get into linux

I didn't make a boot disk at the time of installing linux (oops), and
also when I boot into the Mandriva DVD to see if there any options to
re-install the LILO, my only options seem to be ti re-install Linux or
"upgrade" my copy of linux. I did actually try the upgrade option, but
after asking me basic questoins (language etc), it failed telling me it
couldn't access hda7 (has windows XP re-installation caused this I
wonder)...

Anyway, any advice would be very welcome!

Thanks

Matt.

Hmmm, I have the cd set not dvd, but the boot screen has a Hit F1
option where I enter rescue which has an option to restore boot
loader.

use the boot floppys you used to install linux to boot to root (the root
filesystem disk and the colour boot disk usually, although the later can
varydepending on your hardware). Login, change to
/usr/src/linux<version> and type make bzlilo;lilo (if you have already
compiled your kernel. And while you're at it get a blank floppy put it
in the drive (unprotected) and type: make bzdisk. Take the disk out and
mark it: linux boot disk. Write protect it and keep it in a safe place.
This disk will do the same thing as lilo and you can remove it when you
get a login prompt. Make sure you update it when you change your kernel
though. You can also use loadlin to boot linux if you have it in a
directory on the XP drive along with a copy of the kernel from /boot and
renamed (can't remember what - check loadlin.txt or the man page).

Make your boot disk on a floppy though as it loads your compiled version
of the kernel and if you don't, none of the pci hardware (other than
video and module loaded) will work when you boot the other way (with the
cd).
