A magazine, a ticket to a > Linux Expo, a LUG membership etc etc. Already mentioned in this thread, but worth pointing out again. When people say Linux is Free they're not referring to "free beer" they're referring to "freedom of speech". So says the almighty GNU in the sky: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html (I get the feeling this post is inflamatory for the sake of it, nothing new here really). |

How'd it get outside the drinking glass? I hate those half moon shaped cubes (cubes?) that conform to the side of the glass and dam the liquid until you tilt the glass enough to spill it all over the front of your shirt. |

You shouldn't neglect the "cost" of your own time, though. As someone pointed out: time is the only truly non-renewable resource! We don't live forever, although you might be young enough that you may feel like you will. Sometimes you can accelerate/bootstrap yourself by spending some $ vs. a lot of time. I'm pretty cheap ...er, frugal, myself. p.s. The best line I heard on a guitar group, where someone commented on an American being "cheap", and noting that one American nickel has a buffalo on one side: "he's so cheap, he'll squeeze every nickel until the buffalo shits!" (or the other one "...until the Indian cries") Haw! -- Juhan Leemet Logicognosis, Inc. |

I don't. | | 2) I hate lazy Linux users. | | Linux users are becoming lazy, just like Window users. | | Watching (trolling) around alt.linux I've noticed the increase of | idiots asking questions to simple problems. | | Now, I'm not going to judge the difficulty of a problem but when the | questions being asked are to problems that have the most documentation | out there, you start to wonder. | | 3) I hate people that take Linux too seriously. | | My last troll post, "Screw Linux, I'm going back to Windows!" was an | obvious joke (like this post) yet all the self-righteous Linux | assholes ("gurus") loved taking the time to tell me I suck...which I | sort of respected since I'm an asshole myself but really....why so | serious? | I hate these people. I wished they would die. They do Linux harm. | | 4) I hate people that say Linux is better than Windows. | | Windows is just as good as Linux. | | I use both and can safely say that there isn't anything that Linux can | do that Windows can't. And to give me that bullshit that Windows cost | too much money....come on, who pays for anything that runs on Windows? | http://astalavista.box.sk | Who didn't own a "backup" copy of Windows 95/98? | | 5) I hate people that say Linux is free. | | I hear that all the time. Find me one person that hasn't spent a | dollar on Linux and I will never post again (don't follow-up and tell | me you haven't because I'm lying). | | From books to plush penguins, Linux is a moneymaker just like Windows | but not to the extent, yet. | | And what major Linux web site doesn't have ads on it? Oh, oh. I'm | sorry those ad revenues are to cover the cost of running the site | only. *wink *wink | | 6) I hate Linux being called a 'hackers operating system'. | | What the fuck does that mean?! | Come on, let's all be honest here. Who has really taken the source | code to anything Linux and changed it to meet their real needs? | I know a few people have but the average user....no. | So stop calling it that you sound stupid. | | --Snip-- | No Andrew, you are stupid!!! ha ha, har har. Blah. | | 7) I hate Linus Torvlads. | | There I said it, I don't really mean it but I wanted to see it in | print for once. I really do like Linus but why the media makes him | into a saint, I will never know. Read his book, "Just for Fun" it's | peppered with sexual innuendos. Saint my ass. | | 8) I hate United Linux. | | Being a standard sucks. | | Whoever came up with this idea (www.unitedlinux.com) should be forced | to listen to this: | http://hallaudiobooks.com/audio_cds/257.shtml | | 9) And what I really hate. | | When the last ice cube in a drinking glass sticks to the bottom. | | | Andrew | www.wbglinks.net 1. Linux is still open-source and customizable, maybe its just your distro. Linux is about choice, you have the choice of using /dev/hda to browse your files or ls or nautilus or.... you have the choice of gnome, kde, blackbox, icewm.... The point is you have the choice of whether you want to be molly-coddled or not, you don t have that choice on win32, you get what they want you to use. 2. Its a culture change thing, Linux is attracting more inexperienced users, they have yet to get their heads around the self-support thing. but this situation will eventually improve. 3. I don't think you suck, I just think you havent explored all the possibilities of Linux. 4. Its a freedom thing, I used to work for the "evil" MS and had access to the source-code for windows(that scares the shit out of any OSS project i get involved in, though I'm always careful). Windows IS inferior to all Unices due to the fact that features have been bolted on to windows as needed, nothing works very well, despite the codies best efforts(the code is comparable to the Linux kernel in pure programming quality) the problem is with windows there was no clear defined plan or road map of features, leaving this well-written code badly implemented. 5. I have bought boxed editions of distro s and donated to projects I like. Its purely voluntary and I have never paid anything else. As for the books, quite a few should be available at your local library. And the ads? If they piss me off I use mozilla adblock. And remember the RMS creed: free as in speech, possibly free as in beer. 6. Me, and 60% of Linux users I know. nothing exilerates like your own kernel module working. And the point is they can. 7. When exactly did HE say he was a saint? Or insinuate it? 8. Yes, United Linux sucks. 9. I do too So There!!! Digital movies, cameras, music, etc is being used in | exactly the same way as their analogue counterparts. The power of digital | formats are many: lossless copying, interpolation, lower unit cost, etc. | The problem is people with money are trying to force digital technology to | follow the satus-quo. There is no technical reason why DVDs cannot be used | globaly. The industry has taken significant steps to make DVDs emulate their | analogue conterparts: at the detrement of everyone else. | | For cameras: the movement to digital make abolish microfilm. When we finally | nuke ourselves, archiologists may find our remanants. They cannot learn from | our mistakes if the cannot read about them. To read microfilm (or film) all | that is needed is a candel and a magnifying glass. To read a CD-rom (same | data density) or media card, they have to reverse-engineer our computers and | software. | | Regards, | | James Phillips | http://www.ecn.ab.ca/~nephill/ | | : Andrew | : www.wbglinks.net hey dude, I got a hacker friend in edmonton: Faso Rajan know him? just a shot in the dark i lost his phone and email.
