Saving and Viewing MP4 files

Hello,

I am trying to save and view MP4 files from the Internet. As a user, I
know what MP3 files are. What are MP4 files? What tools do you need to
watch/listen to MP4 files?

My browser is Mozilla 1.7.1. When I click on a news item with MP4 file,
then all I see is a screen full of mixed characters. When I try to save
them it saves it as a text file. I saved them with the extension MP4
and tried to open in RealPlayer and Windows Media Player without
success. How do you save the MP4 attachment file from Usenet? How do
you view/listen to them?
