| I don't see any problem when Knoppix boots. aparently it recognizes the NIC but when i try to surf the net i get "server timed out for (whichever web address i put)" i takes a lot of time to surf the menus of the os when i shut down there a many "Raw Sense Data" errors in I/O sectors of the CD THEN i can see that it took two tries to unmount the NIC eth0 and another two tries to unmount root. my conclusion is that i burned the ISO image file for the Knoppix CD TOO FAST i will make a second attempt in X32 rather than X52 and hope it will work better then. if it does not solve the problem of internet connection i will switch to Mepis as suggested and keep all of you posted. thank you Eli |

Both act the same, both recognize the same hardware, both choke on the same hardware. You would be better off picking one and sticking with it. jimbo |

I just set mine up 20 minutes ago. Click the "K" icon on lower left. Then select 'Net card configuration', the "no" for broadcast, then enetr your (static) IP address (for home router) ie 192.168.x.x or whatever. then dns servers, gateways etc. and it should work right away. Mine works must faster than with the previous OS I was using ;-) |

| thank you! this is exactly the answer I was looking for. I didn't think it were possible for the Knoppix os to guess the ISP's IP address on its own even if it were sophisticated enough to detect all the available installed HARDWARE. BTW - my initial problem was burning the Knoppix CD badly. X52 got many bad sectors on it and it worked much too slowly. my new CD was burnt at X32 and it opens all the menus immediately. now I am going to collect the needed info for the cable connection and transfer it all to the location you gave me in Knoppix. I hope it saves the information somewhere and I can surf the net easily the next times I boot to Knoppix. thank you other people as well for helping out. | I searched the menus and discovered that the network card configuration is in the penguin button - not the K button. I gave all the data I found from the winxp configuration. I did not succeed surfing any web site. I always get server timed out. I think there should be a separate location to configure the physical NIC and cable modem and another for the ISP info. the names of the information requested are sometimes a bit different than those in Windows. I'm sure there is (are) something I missed out while trying to configure it all. I will try not to get frustrated and get some help from near-by Linux-knowledgeable friend or from my ISP. my initial problem for now, is not learning the Linux basics (such as basic commands) but establishing a working internet connection configuration and trying to move-on from there. once I get a working connection I can always connect to newsgroups or read guides on the net. for now I am forced to kill knoppix and go back to my windows xp internet connection newsgroups for help and advice on how to proceed with knoppix config. |

You might also check: Internet > More Programs > LinNeighborhood. I think Samba and Lisa are only needed for local networks, but you could check: Konsole "/etc/inited/samba start". And: Settings > Control Center > Internet & Network > Local Network Browsing. Use Guided Lisa setup. Good luck, jimbo |

I just installed fedora. Very nice version of linux. Thanks knoppix for the intro to linux! |

| Hi Last sunday I was helping a friend who had a problem with his Windows XP box (now theres a surprise), he had various viruses, and spywhere (ditto previois () ), whnich had been removed. In the process of this the internet broke. I took various cd's with me, namely my collection of Linux cd's he has ADSL, anyway, to make sure that the problem was really with the software (windows) and not hardware related I booted Knoppix 3.6, it detected the ADSL, network card, no problem and was stright on the net, Back to windows, and calls to various tech suppot lines, ISP and Microsoft, I fixed the problem (deleted winsock and winsock 2 from the registry) Try booting Knoppix and see if it detects your hardware, As I said it just booted and worked, so perhaps the same thing will happen in your case. If it works out of the box for me then it should do for most people. a few useful commands could be ifconfig this will give you various bits of info, and you should be able to work out if you are on the net from that, ifconfig eth0 up / down brings your eth0 interface up or down respectivly, Have a go, also I really suggest get your self a good book on Linux, or read the ldp pages. Also it may help if we knew more about your hardware, again if knoppix actually boots but does not connect to the net goto a shell prompt and type dmesg to get a list of boot messages, then type dmesg > bootmesg to do the same and dump to a file, copy this to a floppy, and then read through so you know what hardware it has, it says on boot if it's found any network to connect to. Second, Knoppix does not *install* as such. It's designed to run from the medium it is burned on (CD or DVD usually). As far as connecting to the Internet from Knoppix, the biggest hurdle will be whether your NIC is supported by Knoppix. Like you, I have a cable-modem-based Internet connection (I also have a router in the mix). The mere fact that I have a cable-modem-based connection means things are actually *easier* on the network side; as far as Knoppix itself is concerned, as long as it detects my NIC, it thinks I'm on a LAN. By the by, this is equally true in any operating system that has Internet connectivity: Linux, UNIX, Windows, MacOS, etc. Once the NIC support is handled, it's pretty much downhill from there. |
