Default Simple examples of scanner setup

I've found a fair number of examples of doing very clever things to do
scanning under Linux, is there a simple example I can use to avoid
scaring people? Sort of a list of the minimum files needed for a common
scanner like Epson or HP, common interface like USB (rather than serial,
parallel or SCSI which are unlikely). Something without 100+ lines of
commented out, three drivers downlead and installed using documentation
in urdu... I want to show a user group the simple case rather than the
"look how clever I am" case.

I really don't have any common scanners handy to try to build a working
example, and I don't want to discuss what I do have, lest I jinx its
fragile operation.
