Default Sound MUCH weaker on MD10 than XP (mixer @ max)

Hi,
I've a dual boot (Mandrake 10 OE fully updated /XP Pro) Athalon PC with an
integrated motherboard (VIA chips).
Whereas XP produces VERY loud sound, in Linux the sound level is very weak,
even while ALL kmix inputs and output are set to MAX and even when to
volume level on the speaker itself is also set to max (whereas in XP I set
it much lower).

Following please find the respective entries from my dmesg:

Via 686a/8233/8235 audio driver 1.9.1-ac4-2.5
via82cxxx: Six channel audio available
via82cxxx: board #1 at 0xE400, IRQ 5
ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: VIA97 (Unknown)
via_audio: ignoring drain playback error -11
via_audio: ignoring drain playback error -11

Please advise !

TIA ;-)
