| I'm trying to install Suse 9.1 on an old PII PC (233 MHz) with 32 MB of RAM, but keep hitting memory problems when the kernel tries to create tmpfs during the installation process. I've tried installing in text-only mode, and the same problem arises. As I write, I'm running the memory test option to see if I've a hardware problem. (BTW, I know 32 MB is a bit small, but increasing it isn't an option at the moment, and I can live without a fancy GUI, so I'm just looking for options that don't involve upgrading the RAM.) Thanks, John |

Booting without X don't require much ram. |

In either case Debian comes to mind as an easiest alternative. http://packages.debian.org/stable/x11/fvwm http://packages.debian.org/stable/x11/fvwm95 might want to look at Slackware as well: http://www.slackware.com/pb/showdesc...-2.4.18-i486-1 http://www.slackware.com/pb/showdesc....0.43ba-i386-2 both have text-based installations, so you should be ok. (actually I'm not sure about Slack's install, since I haven't seen it since v8.0) Siraaj |
