Default System freezes at 'Calibrating delay loop' after upgrade

Hello,

I recently upgraded from Mandrake 10.0 to 10.1-Community on my IBM T41
laptop. When I try to boot the system with the new 2.6.8.1 kernel the
system freezes at "Calibrating delay loop..." The cursor blinks but
nothing else happens. However, if I boot using the old kernel (2.6.7-3)
from Mandrkae 10.0 then the system boots up fine and works well.

Any idea what the problem is?

Thanks in advance,

Eusebio
