| Thanks again to everyone in the group who gave such detailed advice on choosing a distro and pointing out some things I did not understand. I am writing this on my Linux box - Fedora Yarrow - which is a little sluggish so I have to figure out how to make this Gnome environment a little speedier (or maybe change to a faster desktop). The only real problem I am having is with my sound card. I have tried to find advice on the web for configuring it but practically every link I have found either didn't answer the question of how to get it started or pointed to a now defunct article by Steve Crowder on how to configure the CS4236B. Fedora isn't the first distro I tried on this machine. I started with BLAG then Knoppix now Fedora. I would have settled for either of the first two if they had recognized the sound card but as it is I figured by the third time I did an install and the card was recognized but nothing configured it was going to come down to me. If anyone has a resource on the web were I can find the instructions for getting this one device working it would be appreciated. Leo. |

I have tried going into sound preferences and setting "enable sound server startup" to see if that will work. Leo |

| It could be the protection problems on the /dev/mixer device, or maybe you don't belong to the audio group. /Icebiker "Leo" <leoanddona@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:fLyec.60030$KE5.918545@weber.videotron.net... > Leo wrote: > > Thanks again to everyone in the group who gave such detailed advice on > > choosing a distro and pointing out some things I did not understand. > > > > I am writing this on my Linux box - Fedora Yarrow - which is a little > > sluggish so I have to figure out how to make this Gnome environment a > > little speedier (or maybe change to a faster desktop). > > > > The only real problem I am having is with my sound card. > > > > I have tried to find advice on the web for configuring it but > > practically every link I have found either didn't answer the question of > > how to get it started or pointed to a now defunct article by Steve > > Crowder on how to configure the CS4236B. > > > > Fedora isn't the first distro I tried on this machine. A real learning experience. Got through it all until the part where I had to make file and discovered that while I was doing my install I deliberately deselected programming stuff (I don't code other than PHP) so I didn't have a C compiler to make the file Just too funny. Oh well back to installing again. Leo |

I know I shouldn't run as root, but this is just while I am trying to sort this stuff out. First truly serious run at dedicating a machine to this environment.
