Default USB Storage Device "not claimed"

I bought a 256Mb USB storage gizmo (Memorex) as an early Father's Day
present (for myself) but, when inserted into my Linux machines,
/var/log/messages says:

usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0xa16/0x9903) is not claimed by any active
driver.

I have other USB storage devices, all considerably smaller, that work
OK so the modules and basic support are all present. It's just this
specific device...
Anyone know what's involved in adding support for a particular device?
I'm at a loss where to begin.
TIA!
