Default Usefully-small download of Acrobat reader?

Just went to download Acrobat reader and found that it's an enormous 37MB
download just for something to read pdf files (curiously the same file
size whether I tell the site to give me the normal or basic versions,
which suggests a problem).

Anyone know if the Adobe site is broken at present? (Reason I ask this is
that I installed Acrobat on a system just a couple of weeks ago and I
swear I didn't sit through a 37MB download...)

ps. have tried xpdf and the various other alternatives in the past and
none of them seem to cope well with pdf files containing large (multi-MB)
images...

cheers

Jules

Adobe has recently released 7.0 version of their PDF reader.
see this article
http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/050412/116133.html?.v=1

The version you downloaded probably was the earlier 5.0 version.

Hmm, almost certainly not... looking at the downloads for other platforms,
it seems like the 'full' version is around 40MB (same as for Linux), but
the 'basic' version is typically around 10MB (whilst the Linux basic
version is *still* 40MB)

Looks like a faulty link prob and someone's pointed the Linux basic
version at the wrong file... not sure what my chances of reaching a human
being at Adobe to query the problem are though!

Mind you, I just tried selecting dial-up as the connection; this *only*
offers the basic version - but still says it's 37MB. I wonder if someone
found a serious bug in the basic version and it's been taken offline until
it's fixed (would be nice if it said so on the website if that's the case!)

At least v. 5.0 is still available via their site, so I think I'll just do
that... clone on 40MB for a PDf reader is a little too bloated for my
tastes! :-)

cheers

Jules

Hmm, you're right - that's just over 38MB - whilst in bytes it comes out
as 39467776 here. I suppose it does show that they're screwing around
with the releases though...

FWIW, I just tried joining the Adobe forums to ask there, but their login
system seems broken at the moment - and it lists the contact email for
login problems as 'userforum@adobe.com' in the welcome email, but
'userforums@adobe.com' on the website. I doubt both are right.

Furthermore it lists 'onlinefiles@adobe.com' as a help address for file
download issues - yet sending an email to that gets a bounce back saying
'no such user'.

You'd think such a successful company would be a little more organised in
the support department. Back to version 5 of reader for me I think! :-)
(which as I recall works well enough, apart from a nasty 'feature' in
the install that tries to change ownership of the directory that the
install files are in)

cheers!

Jules

I quit using version 5 because I could not print many files. Acrobat thought
it printed them, but the print filter or print spooler would just quit
without a trace, or would start printing and just hang in the middle of a page.

I would get similar problems in different files, or different places, with
xpdf (which I basically do not like: the user interface sucks).

Version 7 seems better than version 5.
