Default What changed with sata in 2.6?

I have been trying for a while now to get a 2.6 kernel running on a new
Dell optiplex gx270. This system has an ICH5 sata controller with one
sata hard drive connected and one pata dvd/cdrw drive. It is running
fedora core 1 and I haven't had any trouble with the fc1 2.4 kernels.
When I try any of arjan's kernels or the fedora development kernels or
kernels built from those source rpms the initial ramdisk boots and then
the system bombs out when trying mount the root file system. I have
tried compiling ext3 into the kernel and as a module with no luck either
way. Do I need to do something different in the grub settings for 2.6? I
took out the ide-scsi setting for the cd of course.
