Default What to get

I would like to ask two question, please.

1) I want to dual boot either Mandrake or Suse but I can't decide which.
I'm a relative newbie (I've had exposure to RedHat 6.2) and would like
to learn programming. But I can't see what the difference is between
these two distros. Is there any noticeable distinction?

2) I will need to get an external DVD drive. In case I get Suse (??),
does anyone know what speed I will need if I buy the distro directly
from Suse? I'm looking at a 16X DVD drive but I don't know if that is
okay or not.

my opinion is to try both and see which one fits
your computing lifestyle. i think both are going
to be pretty close, but my opinion is that suse
will have the edge

any ol' speed is fine. if you're going to buy it,
the box has CDs and the DVD. your other option is
to download the FTP installer, which is a small
ISO, small enough to fit on a CD; of course, you
will want a high-speed 'Net connection.

They are relatively the same, but Suse 9.2 is slower then MDK 10.1,
but way more stable - at least on my machine. On the other hand, MDK seem
to be a better out-of-the box desktop enviroment - it has almost complete
multimedia support and drivers that support direct rendering on newer ATI
cards, like 9600 and 9800, and maybe even X-series (not sure about that,
though).
If you choose MDK, maybe it is better to stick with 10.1 community
edition or even 10.0 official then 10.1 official - is it buggy as hell.

If you are remotely familiar with config files, what does what and with
the content of /etc directory in general, I would suggest Slackware. Maybe
wait a week or two, we might see Slackware 10.1 soon. Why Slack? It
will force you to learn and go under the hood, preparing you for Gentoo
installation after which you can forget almost all of your troubles

.... and that is one of the problems with Mandrake

I was just looking at the Suse web site and checking the installation
instructions for the Pro 9.2. Under the network settings it has a
listing for DSL but nothing for a cable modem. Does anyone here have
experience on how to configure for a cable modem? Specifically the 3Com
modem.

Second that, the only problem, does the OP want to learn how
linux works or gain knowledge about "yast" (suse) that'll
restrict him to this distro?

Show me how to configure lilo as boot-loader using auto-yast,
doesn't work? To bad you just have been forced by suse using the
boot-loader of their choice (sure grub works, but this isn't the
point, the question why does some distro force you to use what
they like?).

.... what i said is, you do not have to use yast. if i
want to use LILO with suse, i can. yea, i realize that
they default to GRUB, but if you DONT want to use yast,
you obviously want to do things manually.

if you REALLY want me to show you, you'll have to let
me know which flight to Deutschland you got me

auto-yast is used to perform unattended custom installs, like rh
kickstart, while rh follows the KIS principle, the important post
part is just a bash script. Suse uses obscure xml a PITA to
maintain and somehow broken, not allowing you to choose lilo as
boot-loader.

Sure you can disable suseconfig, that wasn't my point, sorry if
this wasn't clear.

That would be funny.
