Red Hat charge for their software so they have the money to pay for the employees and servers to make the updates, package them, and distribute them. If you want to use something like RHEL4, why not use CentOS4? Of course, they accept financial contributions, too, to pay some of their expenses. Some people pay commercial suppliers so they can put together an integrated product and maintain it. Otherwise, why not just pick up the source from somewhere and do it all yourself? -- .~. Who do you think pays Red Hat to test those updates? Who do you think pays Red Hat to package those updates and all the other packages into a distribution that you can easily install? Who do you think pays Red Hat to maintain all the development and test machines? Who do you think pays Red Hat to maintain all the servers to distribute the updates? Who do you think pays Red Hat to purchase the networking capacity so you can download those updates? It is the subscribers to their service that do it, and you want to freeload off all those of us who pay for it? -- .~.
