| 1) I had installed Unbuntu from the 692Mbyte CDrom download called Edgy Eft (version 6.10). 2) I had not been able to get the ADSL modem working (this is critical - one *must* have a broadband connection for Linux file maintainance). 3) I was able to add the package containing the GCC compiler (it is on the CDRom) but... 4) The missing parts that stopped Qt compiling (xlib.h missing etc) was a package called libx11-dev. (Thanks to Tim Dewhurst of Bugless for that) 5) He also told me to forget USB modems and buy a proper modem-router that plugs into the ethernet? connector on the motherboard. 6) I bought an 802.11g specification ADSL modem from Tesco for £48.97, plugged it into my original PC and configured it according to the handbook using my existing username and password (from the Binatone ADSL 500 modem) and amazingly, it worked (on the PC). 7) I swapped the ethernet cable from the PC to the Linux box and it just worked too! (despite my previous meddling on the Linux box with the USB modem) 8) Using the Synaptec Package Manager, I installed libx11-dev and then 138 other automatic updates that were pending sprang up... two hours later I reset my machine and... 10) ...Qt compiled correctly.
