Default xterm _entire_ screen blinking

Hello all, after discovering a possible rootkit and also since
things weren't generally running as smoothly as they could be i decided to
simply reinstall my system.

Everything is working fine although there is one small thing which is
kinda bugging me-it never used to happen before and i don't know where to
start looking for a solution.

The thing is this (i'm not sure if i can all this a
"problem"), whenever i type into an xterminal or a gnome-terminal window
at my bash prompt and try to use the [tab] autocompletion the screen
blinks at me, the autocompletion works but it's a bit of a nuisance. This
does not occur in a konsole window.

Any ideas?

Kind Regards.

Maybe the visual bell is turned on. In xterm this can be toggled on/off
in the ctrl-middle-click menu, or it can be set as a resource in
~/.Xresources or ~/.Xdefaults or /etc/X11/app-defaults/xterm

e.g., resources visualBell and visualBellDelay

Perhaps it's your global "visual feedback" setting.

From the main menu, select Preferences -> Sound, then click on the
"System Bell" tab. Select your preferred option for visual feedback.

The above is for Gnome 2.8 in Fedora Core 3. If that's not what you're
running, hopefully it will lead you in the right direction.

Brilliant, that worked. Found a related article in redhat's archive via
google but it didn't tell me where to change the preference. Must've
happened when i remade my home environment.

Cheers :-)
