| I installed Solaris 9 to my Ultra 2, and later, only AFTER the GNOME desktop had been installed, did I realize that somehow, a LOT of Solaris wasn't installed, for reasons I don't know. Am I going to have to reinstall the whole thing all over again from scratch, or is there a way to have the machine automatically install the missing components? (There are so many missing components that it's unreasonable to even think of installing them individually.) CJ |

Here it is: # df -k Filesystem kbytes used avail capacity Mounted on /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 2367085 1184939 1134805 52% / /proc 0 0 0 0% /proc mnttab 0 0 0 0% /etc/mnttab fd 0 0 0 0% /dev/fd swap 2371160 32 2371128 1% /var/run swap 2371144 16 2371128 1% /tmp /dev/dsk/c0t1d0s7 8705501 9 8618437 1% /export/home0 /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s7 4775266 73034 4654480 2% /export/home That's the whole list. It seems small even to me. CJ |

Drop that CD into the drive and when the dtfile window appears on your desktop double-click on the "installer" icon. If that does not do it, then take a look at the content of /var/sadm/system/admin/CLUSTER. It should read 'CLUSTER=SUNWCall' for a 'complete' installation. [bin]# df -k Filesystem kbytes used avail capacity Mounted on /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 1986439 1311528 615318 69% / /proc 0 0 0 0% /proc mnttab 0 0 0 0% /etc/mnttab fd 0 0 0 0% /dev/fd /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s1 578351 148422 372094 29% /var swap 542344 32 542312 1% /var/run /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s5 4034392 1503313 2490736 38% /opt swap 1159056 616744 542312 54% /tmp /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s6 1504639 473803 970651 33% /usr/sfw /dev/dsk/c0t1d0s0 3608078 2413613 1158385 68% /export/home Your /opt and /usr/sfw will not have that much usage on a fresh install. GNOME is not installed; it would have increased the usage of / by about 300MB. |

Let me be a little more clear: I need very specific, basic instructions. Simply inserting the CD in the drive doesn't automatically take me to an installation program, and I'm afraid I will have to be guided through the process. I'm afraid that I'm a total beginner when it comes to doing anything with the Sun OS and/or Solaris. > > Have you looked at the contents of the packages on CD 2/2 and compared > them with the software which you seem to be missing? It's just not possible to provide such specific instructions without even knowing what you have already done. If you selected a "Complete" install during the installation, you should have been prompted after the first reboot to remove CD 1 from the drive and insert CD 2. Did you select a "Complete" install? If so, did you place CD 2 into the drive when prompted? > >> >> Have you looked at the contents of the packages on CD 2/2 and compared >> them with the software which you seem to be missing? > > I'm not even all that sure of how I'd do that. You posted the output of 'df -k', so I assume that you do have at least a minimally working system, one which -should- have vold working. Is it running? [tmp]# ps -ef | grep vold root 247 1 0 Jul 16 ? 0:01 /usr/sbin/vold If you get this kind of result, then placing CD 2 into the drive -should- result in a pop-up window on your display. If vold is not running, then, after placing CD 2 into the drive, # mount -F hsfs /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s0 /cdrom # cd /cdrom # ls and you should see the contents of the top-level directory on the CD. >> >> What is the content of the file /var/sadm/system/admin/CLUSTER? > > I'll check. There are a number of books available which explain such basics of Solaris administration. A free one which you can download is at: http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/solSysadminGuide/ It's a PDF file but if you have Adobe's Acrobat Reader on that XP box, you can read it, even print parts of it should you wish. |
