Is there any correct way to install the RAM? I have read that you need to
put the RAM in with the largest DIMMs first in order to get the best out of
the system.

from what I have read (and experienced), it does not really matter
much... compare the SS20 Service Manual

with the SPARCstation 20 DSIMM/VSIMM Installation Guide

At least to me, those two did sound a bit differently.
