Hi,

I have a ultra 2 here at my home with some problems. It has 2 cpus (200
mhz each), 1 g. of ram, and 2 disks, and older cdrom.

the default iface hme0 never worked flips on and offeven when connected
via crossover cable to ultra 1, and I installed quad nic ( x1049 or
501-4837-03) which works fine. recently I bought another quad nic same
model but release -01 - in other words it's labled 501483701 and
501483703 like the one that works.

I tried to get it working in ultra 1 - the led is green, but show-devs
does not show any qfe devices, and probe-all does not help.

So, as I mentioned above, I have an ultra 2 with working quad nic. So, I
removed the working quad nic (501483703) and installed the other one
(501483701). Same story: the led is green, but the box does not see
it....

DOES IT mean it's faulty and I should ship it back for replacement?

all sbus slots are filled with x1065a cards - can that affect systems
ability to recongnise sbus modules?

Sounds like your new qfe is likely busted. I've used a X1065 a number
of times and haven't seen any interference with other boards. I guess
the final test would be to put your old qfe in the U1 and verify it
works there. If so, then the new board is probably dead. Before
sending it back, check for bent pins on the sbus connector. Maybe
you'll get lucky...

Basically, here are the questions that I still have:

(1) provided my prom/post level is greater than 3, is show-devs command
a reliable way to test that a module is usable/alive?

(2) Green led means that NIC is being hit by electric signals on the
cable, and nothing else? Green led does not imply that a NIC is
good/bad?

Sounds like it's time to sell all my sbus/scsi stuff, and buy pci/fc
based stuff.

I've not had any problems with it in conjunction with sun built
cards. I've only messed with a couple non-sun sbus cards, but they
worked fine as well.

It means the ethernet controller on the board is detecting a link.
However it does not indicate that the sbus interface is working- there
is no indicator for that.

Nah, just get another qfe. Ultra 5's and 10's are OK, but not as fun
as the sbus stuff.

just to confirm what was obvious to some of you

I requested a replacement unit from a vendor, and got one last monday

It worked right away with no problems in ultra 1

so, the other one was indeed dead
