| The official sun documentation (http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub...a_1E.html#DISK) lists as the biggest hard disks that can be used with ultra1 some 4.2GB drives. However, I seem to remember that, in the past, an ultra1 here used to run with a fujitsu drive (unfortunately it broke some time ago, so I can't check exact model name and capacity, but I'm pretty sure it was bigger than 4.2 GB). Don't know how it got there, but it seemed to work (before breaking, of course). So, the question is: is that possible? (it's entirely possible that I don't recall correctly, and if so I apologize) Are there hard drives bigger than 4.2GB that, although not officially supported, will work on the ultra1? Where can I find a list? Thanks |

The 4.2GB drives were the largest disk that Sun qualified and sold for the Ultra 1 when it was still being manufactured. After that time the disk drive technology has advanced and current disks are much larger. Sun, however, has nothing to gain by spending lots of money testing more modern disks for their old and obsolete systems. > Are there hard drives bigger than 4.2GB that, although not officially > supported, will work on the ultra1? Where can I find a list? Any SCA disk that fits physically (low profile) and with a current consumption equal or less than the disks that Sun did support should work. The current consumption of the disks of today is usualy lower or equal to the old disks, so you should be able to use anything, except perhaps the largest 15000 rpm disks. -- Göran Larsson http://www.mitt-eget.com/ |
