| Hey all. I'm prepping to set up an E220R server via TTY. I haven't done this before, and want to make sure I get the right bits. My research indicates that I can use an RJ45 cable and an RJ45-DB9 coupler to connect to a 9-pin serial port on a PC. Pointing my Windows terminal app to the COM port should then allow me to get it going. 2 questions: 1. Should the patch cable be crossed or straight-through? and 2. Is there a specific pinout that I should configure the coupler for? I've seen a page on Cisco's site for setting up cables for their switches, but haven't found specific Sun info yet. Thanks! DW |

This depends on the RJ45 cable. > I've seen a page on Cisco's site for setting up cables for their > switches, but haven't found specific Sun info yet. Does this E220R have a LOM card? It's a card with a RJ45 serial, RJ12 (I think) phone line and a RJ45 ethernet connector. If the server has a LOM card, the RJ45 serial has the same pinout as Cisco is using. If you have a coupler and RJ45 cable that works with the PC and a Cisco switch, it should work with the LOM card. If the server don't have a LOM card, I guess you intend to use a RJ45-DB25 coupler at the server end. If you use one of those silver couplers that sometimes is delivered with the servers, the RJ45 cable should probably be crossed (compared to what you have now (if it was working)). Not ethernet crossed, but crossed 1<->8, 2<->7 ... 8<->1. /Roger -- Roger Gustavsson roger.gustavsson (_at_) teliasonera.com |

Thus, your patch cable really depends more on how you wire up your DD9 connector. Thankfully Sun choose to use the same exact pinout that Cisco uses, but other manufactorers are all over the map. I think more and more though tend to use the cisco pinout. So, use the Cisco pinout and use a straight through patch-cord, or a flat silver-satin type cable to connect between the two ends. I was going to point you to the Sun docs showing the pinout, but the hardware docs for the system at http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub...220R/spec.html shows that its serial ports at DB25? A link off that page gives the RJ45 serial pinout for Sun systems that do use RJ45 serial ports (ie, Netra X1, V100, V120, etc). http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub..._conn.html#SER |

IIRC the E220R uses the same system board as the Ultra 60, which certainly uses DB25 TTY connectors. Yep, the P/N is 501-5606 for both. Simplest way to connect the server to a PC is with a regular RS232 modem PC cable and a Radio Shack 9 pin null modem adapter. |

If that doesn't work, try a straight ethernet cable instead of the blue cable. If you have a 25pins D-shell connector, you can use a 25pins cisco converter plug, and try the above. -- Alex. |

Sun has the habit of using female serial connectors on their systems, while PC's and most terminals use male connectors. And, if you don't need one now, you'll probably are glad you have one when you need somewhere it in the future -- Alex. |
