| 1. I acquired an Ultra 10 without a power supply. An online doc at Sun gave a pin-out that matches a power supply I have from an Intel tower. But the Sun doc said to measure the voltages with the power supply plugged in. That would make the pin-out backwards (unless it is an "xray view" from the other side of the mother board). This power supply is labeled "SH-250ATX High Quality Switching Power Supply" Should I risk plugging it in? -- Wes Groleau ----------- "Thinking I'm dumb gives people something to feel smug about. There's no risk involved as the Ultra 10 uses a standard PeeCee ATX power supply. Sunny |

Well, I hooked it up, and plugged in a PC monitor to the VGA port. I can hear the sounds of booting up, but nothing on the monitor. (I used to use Sun a lot at work, so it sounded like I remember.) It has a card with a connector for one of those really cool big Sun monitors, which I don't have. Do I need to change a jumper or remove that video card to use the VGA? Or is it likely the VGA circuits are damaged? -- Wes Groleau After the christening of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, "That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I wanted to stay with you guys." |

Or is it likely the VGA circuits are damaged? It should default to the VGA port if you pull the 13W3 frame buffer - but you'll also need a Sun keyboard as Thomas said, otherwise it will go to serial. With no frame buffer or keyboard, the VGA monitor should at least display a message saying it has gone to serial. Sunny |

I bet I can scrounge up something.... (Still have a smart terminal I built thirty years ago, but I'm sure I could program one of my other machines to play console to the Sun.) -- Wes Groleau Nobody believes a theoretical analysis -- except the guy who did it. Lot of stuff there, but kind of hard to navigate. -- Wes Groleau I've noticed lately that the paranoid fear of computers becoming intelligent and taking over the world has almost entirely disappeared from the common culture. Near as I can tell, this coincides with the release of MS-DOS. -- Larry DeLuca |
