Default SCA hard drive questions

Greetings all, I need to put some larger hard disks in my Ultra 2. I
currently have two 9.1 gig drives installed and would like to put
either two 18 or two 36 gig SCA drives in this machine. For instance,
would a Seagate ST318404LC be compatable with the Ultra II? I would
think that what ever drives the Ultra 60 and 80 support would also work
in this machine.

Thanks in advance for the help

Yep. You can use just about any SCA SCSI drive, with the exception of
those that use HVD. I've only ever seen two HVD disk drives in my life -
they are far from common. I'm not sure if Seagate make any at all. I
doubt anyone makes them now.

I guess the Ultra2 has room for 1.6" drives, but if not, then you would
have to stick to Seagate ST3xxxxxxLC and avoid the use of ST1xxxxxLC
drives. You might need 1.6" caddies if you use them. Given their age, I
would avoid them anyway now.

Where, here is a selection from my Ultra 80.

# uname -a
SunOS sparrow 5.10 Generic_118833-02 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-80

# format
Searching for disks...done

AVAILABLE DISK SELECTIONS:
0. c0t0d0 <SEAGATE-ST336704LC-0004 cyl 14087 alt 2 hd 12 sec 424>
/pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/sd@0,0
1. c0t1d0 <COMPAQ-BD036635C5-B017 cyl 14000 alt 2 hd 20 sec 254>
/pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/sd@1,0
2. c1t0d0 <SEAGATE-ST336704LC-0004 cyl 14087 alt 2 hd 12 sec 424>
/pci@1f,4000/scsi@3,1/sd@0,0
3. c1t3d0 <SEAGATE-ST173404LC-0003 cyl 14087 alt 2 hd 24 sec 424>
/pci@1f,4000/scsi@3,1/sd@3,0
Specify disk (enter its number):

Note one of them, the ST173404LC is an ST1xxxxxxLC and so 1.6" high.
That is in an external box, but I think it could fit in the U80 if it
did not already have two disks inside.

The 18GB's will work, I can't say about the 36's though as I don't have any.
The only think you have to worry about then is heat.
Make sure you hoover the Ultra 2 out thoroughly before putting it back
together.

I'm not aware of any limit on these SCSI disks, so I think he will be
okay with 300 GB disks if he can afford to buy them. I know Ultra 5/10s
have a limit of 137 (or there abouts) GB on their IDE disks, but there
should be no limit to the size of a SCSI disk he fits.

You can put any SCA drive in the machine, and don't worry about heat
since the U2 has a fan for the drive bay.

Thanks for the help guys, you have confirmed my conclusion that most
SCA drives will work. I want to install Solaris 10 but would like to
have a little more breathing room hard drive wise; since a full install
of Solaris 10 uses about 4 gigs of space.

Thanks again...

Craig

Drives cannot be 1.6" (1/2 hieght), only 1" will fit in the side slots.
