They're pretty noisy while they're booting, but once Solaris is up and running, they're quiet. I've no idea how they compare to an Ultra 10 (I don't have one), but my SB 1000 is significantly quieter than my Ultra 60--and the latter has the noise reduction kit fitted! -- Rich Teer, SCNA, SCSA, OpenSolaris CAB member President, Rite Online Inc. | There are different opinions ranging from very loud to not worse then my PC. I've seen a report in this newsgroup from somebody who spend a weekend to put rubber isolation inside the Blade to reduce the sound. I've written a report about my Ultra 10 and how i made it silent (~18 db now - something you really can' t hear). Unforunately it's written in german: http://www.sonnenblen.de/index.php/topic,3551.0.html I found the Ultra 10 to be much to noisy for a workstation. The Sun Specs give allmost the same technical bell numbers. So i guess it will be loud if you are sensitive to noise. One more problem is that the Blade 1000/2000 do not contain normal hardware parts, so it's almost impossible to create your own noise reduction kit. And i don't know if there is one from Sun for the Blade (i only heard about this option for Ultra 80/Ultra 60). |

The two main sources of noise are: 1. Two big (119mm x 119mm x 38mm) fans 2. The disc(s) Both fans are temperature controlled but they produce some air flow noise even when the machine is idle. Both produce enough noise such that the disc is no problem ;-) I have replaced one of the fans by a low noise Papst fan. After this I was able to hear the original SUN 72G disc (MAN3735F) and thus replaced it by a Seagate ST373207FC. Now I can only hear the disc during reads or writes. After all I have to conclude that my machine is louder than my PCs, but it is bearable. Andreas |

As far as I know, the kit is only for the Ultra 60 - there is nothing from Sun to reduce the noise of an Ultra 80. I might be wrong, but don't think so. I've got such a kit in a Ultra 60 that I rarely use, so if it was possible I'd move the kit to my UItra 80 which runs 24/7/365. That said, the Ultra 80 is pretty well packed, so I doubt it is possible for me to reduce the cooling much. -- Dave K MCSE. MCSE = Minefield Consultant and Solitaire Expert. The Blade 1000 has large "controlled" fans and the U10 small and stupid ones. So unless you run into a Solaris problem they should be pretty good. The Blade 1000 is a beast until booted. The U10 has a weird high pitched noise while the Blade 1000 is more of a breezer. Note though, if you have very old 10k disks in your Blade 1000 it might be worhhwhile to upgrade them. The old ones might produce more noise. For me the Blade 1000 is much easier to my ears. IMHo> Fredrik -- Fredrik Lundholm dol @ ce.chalmers.se |

But I have one Ultra 5 and one Blade 2000, and the Blade 2000 is a lot quieter than the Ultra 5 is. The Ultra 5 was really noisy with the default fan and the default hdd. I changed the fan's too Papst fan's, much better =). I also changed the hdd to a newer and more quiet Seagate Barracuda disk. But you can't change the fans in the Blade 1000/2000 though it's not "PC-standard" fans. Although you accually don't have to change the fans, they are controlled and quiet. The only time the Blade 2000 is really noisy is during boot and shutdown, don't know why... |

| If i have a huge CPU bound task like a large compile job where utilization is near 100%. How long do the fans need to go to full speed ? My iMac G5 is going from okay to extremely noise just after a few seconds 100% CPU useage. This means during each compile and this on-off is much more worse then a constant mid level noise. I can't tell you how much i hate this machine. |

Never. I've never seen the fans go beyond 40%, even with both CPUs going at full blast for an hour. I agree - I had a laptop that did exactly the same thing and it was far more disrupting than a constant noise. I was very pleased when I could replace it with an Acer Ferrari 4000 which has a constant fan. My Blade 2000 is far quieter than a cheap Athlon 2000+ based Linux PC that shares my desk, even with 2 10,000 rpm FC-AL disk drives. -- Stefaan A Eeckels -- "Object-oriented programming is an exceptionally bad idea which could only have originated in California." --Edsger Dijkstra |

My 18.1" Sun LCD is also connected to the UPS, so all-in-all the power consumption is pretty reasonable. -- Stefaan A Eeckels -- Isn't it amazing how a large number of evil morons can give the appearance of being a single evil genius? --Mel Rimmer |
